    Engagement Rate Formula Explained

The standard engagement rate formula divides total interactions by audience size, then multiplies by 100. Interactions are likes, comments, shares and saves.

    By followers: (likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ followers × 100. By reach: (likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ reach × 100.

    For example, a post with 600 likes, 40 comments, 25 shares and 35 saves has 700 interactions. On an account with 20,000 followers, the engagement rate is 700 ÷ 20,000 × 100 = 3.5%.

Reach-based rates are usually more accurate, because they only count people who saw the post. Buffer, for instance, calculates engagement rate against impressions in its social media research.

What Is a Good Engagement Rate?

There is no single official benchmark. Therefore, treat these ranges as a rule of thumb for follower-based rates:

    • Below 1%: low. People see your content, but it is not moving them.
    • 1% to 3%: average for most accounts.
    • 3% to 6%: good. Your audience is genuinely interested.
    • Above 6%: excellent, and common for smaller niche creators.

Engagement rates usually fall as accounts grow, so compare yourself with creators of a similar size. Better still, track your own engagement rate every month. When to Use an Engagement Rate Calculator

An engagement rate calculator is most useful at a few key moments. Run your numbers at each of these points:

    • Before pitching a brand, so you can quote a real, current number.
    • Every month, to see whether your content is improving.
    • Before a collaboration, to check another creator’s public numbers.
    • After testing a new format, such as carousels versus reels.

You will find reach, likes, shares and saves inside your account insights. The Instagram Help Center explains where each metric lives for professional accounts.

    Engagement Rate Calculator FAQ

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?

For follower-based rates, 1% to 3% is average and anything above 3% is good. Smaller accounts often reach 5% or more. Compare yourself with accounts of a similar size in your niche.

Should I calculate engagement by followers or by reach?

Use reach if you can see it in your insights. It only counts people who actually saw the post, so it reflects content quality better. Use followers when comparing other creators, because their reach is private.

How many posts should I include in the average?

Average your last 10 to 12 posts. A single post can be an outlier, while too many old posts hide recent changes.

Why does my engagement rate drop as my followers grow?

Larger audiences include more passive followers who rarely interact. Your total interactions can grow while the percentage falls, and that is normal.

    Is my data saved anywhere?

No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to a server or stored.
